Hendrick Raedani is Divisional Head: Alternative and Renewable Energy, Energy Department at City of Ekurhuleni
City of Ekurhuleni discusses the city's vision to achieve green, affordable, and secure energy.
The city aims to reduce its reliance on traditional energy sources and increase the use of renewable energy. By 2030, at least 30-40% of the city's energy supply should come from renewable sources, and by 2050, the city aims to get around 50% of its energy from renewable sources.
The city has identified 56 Eskom intake points, totalling 2.5 GW of demand, and plans to reduce this demand by at least 40% through renewable energy. The city also assists industries in achieving their own green energy targets and has appointed 47 independent power producers to sell renewable energy to the city.
In 2017, the city appointed these producers to sell a total of 700 MW of renewable energy, and recently advertised a request for proposal to supplement this first bit window for independent power producers.
The city's goal is to remain sustainable and adapt to the changing environmental value chain while safeguarding its revenue from the sale of electricity to customers.
