Hendrick Raedani is Divisional Head: Alternative and Renewable Energy, Energy Department at City of Ekurhuleni
City of Ekurhuleni discusses the municipality's energy strategy, both in the short and long term.
In the short term, the focus is on supplying renewable energy to all operations, reducing demand from the grid, and generating electricity for sale to customers. This is achieved through the development of small-scale generation plants and the installation of solar PVs on buildings.
Medium-term strategies include increasing the number of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and generating electricity for sale to customers through long-term power purchase agreements.
Long-term goals include reducing the city's reliance on the national grid, increasing the percentage of electricity supplied by IPPs to at least 50% by 2050, and positioning the municipality as a great service provider by allowing private companies to wheel energy across the grid.
The overall strategy is to remain relevant in the changing electricity space as more companies install their own alternative power sources.
