With Alderman Leon Van Wyk, Executive Mayor at George Municipality and Bongani Mandla
George Municipality discusses the team's experience in facilitating electricity wheeling after receiving council approval in December 2020. The team encountered obstacles from both a legal and financial perspective, including the absence of historical maps or templates for agreements and contracts, the impact of the new energy source on existing supply agreements, and the need for revenue neutrality.
Additional hurdles arose on the technical side, as most meters required manual data entry and the team needed to provide a use of systems agreement. The team overcame these challenges by automating the data capture process, reducing errors, and collaborating with the Western Cape government to standardize system agreements and create a template for easier adoption.
Despite resource limitations, the team made significant progress within the wheeling framework.
